The Class I railroad has begun double-stacked intermodal operations at the Pennsylvania site, which was first announced in October 2013 at part of the rail line’s National Gateway Initiative.

Class I railroad CSX has begun operations at its new
Pittsburgh intermodal rail terminal, providing freight movement to and from
western Pennsylvania, the company announced.
The Pittsburgh facility sits on a 70-acre site that was previously
utilized by Pittsburgh & Lake Erie rail yard in Stowe Township and McKees
Rocks Borough, said the rail line.
The site of the facility was announced in October
2013 and received support from local, county, state and federal level officials.
The new terminal is the “last key component” of CSX’s
National Gateway Initiative, an $850 million public-private partnership to
create a network of double-stack rail and intermodal terminals, said the rail
line.
More than 95 percent of CSX’s
intermodal network is now double-stack cleared, said the railway.
“CSX is committed to
serving the growing needs of our current intermodal customers and others who
can benefit from the speed and efficiency of intermodal service,” said Fredrik
Eliasson, CSX executive vice president and chief sales and marketing officer.
“Our newest facility in Pittsburgh will connect southwestern Pennsylvania to
markets across the country and around the world, while improving supply chain
flows and reducing transportation costs,” said Eliasson.
CSX has undergone intense criticism for its company-wide restructuring, which has led to service disruptions and a federal investigation into the company’s service performance. CSX CEO Hunter Harrison continues to stand behind his restructuring plan, apologizing for the disruptions and promising increased efficiency in the future.
