CSX opens intermodal hub in Fla.

CSX has begun operating a sophisticated, new intermodal terminal in Winter Haven, Fla., about 45 minutes west of Orlando.
The facility will serve as an end-of-line rail hub for freight distribution in Orlando, Tampa and South Florida.

Winter Haven intermodal terminal

The 318-acre facility is surrounded by 930 acres that is planned for up to 7.9 million square feet of warehouses, light industrial and office facilities.
The terminal features five 3,000-feet loading tracks and two 10,000-feet arrival and departure tracks. CSX estimates the terminal will process up to 300,000 containers a year.
Containerized freight previous handled at CSX’s intermodal facility in Orlando has been shifted to Winter Haven. As part of the investment arrangement, CSX is turning over the old terminal to the state for passenger rail development.
Among the energy-saving technology advancements at the terminal are three high-powered electric cranes that minimize noise and emissions, solar panels on each building and exterior LED lighting.
“This is one of the most technologically advanced facilities of its kind in the country,” Tony Reck, chairman and chief executive officer of Evansville Western Railway, which actually owns the facility.
“The ripple effect of this terminal’s operations will be felt statewide and beyond — ultimately setting the stage for future growth in the region.”
