Cuba opens new container terminal in Mariel

A new container terminal capable of handling 800,000 containers annually was dedicated at the Port of Mariel on Monday.
Both Raul Castro, president of Cuba, and Dilma Rousseff, the president of Brazil, were on hand this week for a ribbon cutting.
The BBC said the first phase of the project “was financed largely by the Brazilian development bank BNDES and built by the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.”
The New York Times and other publications have said the terminal will be operated by PSA International.
Crowley Maritime began calling the new terminal this week. Crowley has operated a service between the U.S. and Cuba for 12 years. The weekly service sails from Port Everglades.
