CUSTOMS, NVOs TO STUDY AES-NVO TRANSPORTATION MODULE
U.S. Customs and executives from the non-vessel-operating common carrier industry will meet in Newark, N.J. May 10-11 to begin laying the ground work for an NVO transport module in the Automated Export System.
AES was implemented several years ago to convert paper submissions of export data to automated filings. Customs uses the data for enforcement purposes, while the Census Bureau compiles it for the country’s trade statistics.
Customs says it requires export transport data from the NVOs to know when their cargo is leaving the country. Ocean carriers provide this data in a Vessel Transportation Module in AES. The agency believes that it’s possible to develop a similar module in AES to accommodate the NVOs.
With the NVO industry’s input, Customs hopes to complete most of the work for the NVO transportation module before the end of the year.
