CUSTOMS PROPOSES NEW RULES FOR WAREHOUSING UNCLAIMED IMPORTS

U.S. Customs has proposed new rules for warehousing unclaimed imports.

The agency says the new rules are needed to accommodate an increase in unclaimed imports, known to the government as “general order.” This has prompted the import industry to request that Customs put in place standardized, national procedures to approve and operate warehouses to receive unclaimed imports.

Customs also proposes changes to its rules regarding circumstances where the title of unclaimed or abandoned imports shifts to the government for public auction.

The agency will take comments from the industry regarding the new rules through Sept. 11. For more information, contact Gerard Bradley of Customs’ Office of Field Operations at 202-927-0765.
