DB Schenker says hub is “green”

British tabloids like to use “Oz” as shorthand in headlines as stories that take place in Australia. Appropriately, DB Schenker is saying a new facility it is building in at Melbourne’s international airport is emerald ' err ' green.

Schenker Australia Pty Ltd., a subsidiary of DB Schenker, said the new cargo hub comprises 11,000 square meters of warehouse space and 2,500 square meters of office, which will house about 230 employees currently scattered across four locations. DB Schenker expects the building to be opened in July.

The hub will have a strong environmental focus. Rainwater will be collected and stored for irrigation, flushing toilets, reducing water consumption by 70 percent. Another 350,000 liters will be stored permanently just in case it is ever needed for firefighting.

Installation of solar panels, and conversion of 80 percent of all forklifts to electric forklifts will reduce energy consumption, as will siting of the buildings. An adjacent office complex will reduce direct sun light impact and lead to a 40 percent reduction in energy consumption for cooling. Recycling programs will minimize landfill/general waste by 60 percent.
