The logistics provider is calling the new facility, located near Helsinki, the “Terminal of the Future.”
DB Schenker Logistics will open a new logistics terminal near Helisinki, Finland June 3, according to a statement from the company.
At a total cost of 57 million euros (U.S. $63.9 million), DBS said the 51,000-square-meter facility will be one of its largest and most modern terminals.
The new terminal will house 650 employees in the Viinikkala logistics area, and offer 31,940 square meters of storage, including 28,630 square meters of heated warehouses.
DBS said the facility was built according to Transported Asset Protection Association requirements and follows the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method standards, using solar energy, for example, to recharge forklift batteries. The terminal was designed with a two-floor concept in order to increase overall safety by ensuring pedestrians and trucks are never on the same level.
“Combining four locations and operations such as land transport, air, and sea freight in one building will improve our efficiency and productivity, and streamline our cargo flows between the different transport modes,” said Schenker AG CEO Karl-Friedrich Rausch.
“It is near the airport, closer to the harbor than before, and it has a better connection to the road network,” he added. “The terminal also has one of DB Schenker’s biggest sorters – 35,000 to 40,000 deliveries will be processed per day.”
