Domestic intermodal rises by 10% in 1Q

Domestic intermodal container volume ticked up 10.2-percent, year over year, during the first quarter, making it the sixth consecutive quarter of increases of more than 10 percent, according to the Intermodal Association of North America.
The total intermodal volume of 3.68 million units is also good for the second highest volume in domestic container history, the association reported in its Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics report.
Year over year, ISO containers grew by 3 percent to 1.87 million units, with West Coast movements outpacing those from the East Coast.
Trailer volume fell, year over year, by 6.3 percent, but the IANA sees a bit of positive movement in the result. During the last two quarters of 2012, trailer volumes fell by double digits. – Jon Ross
