Drilling Deep: How long does relief from AB5 last in California?

The “New Year’s Eve surprise” may have been a first step toward getting the California trucking industry out from under the AB5 legislation that will have serious consequences for the independent owner operator model. Weston LaBar is the CEO of the Harbor Trucking Association, which represents the drayage industry. He spoke on the Drilling Deep podcast about the impact of AB5 if it is upheld for the industry and his reaction to the court case that may have allowed the trucking industry to sidestep a radically changed future. He was Director of Oil, Director of News, the editor in chief of Platts Oilgram News and the “talking head” for Platts on numerous media outlets, including CNBC, Fox Business and Canada’s BNN. He covered metals before joining Platts and then spent a year running Platts’ metals business as well. He was awarded the International Association of Energy Economics Award for Excellence in Written Journalism in 2015. In 2010, he won two Corporate Achievement Awards from McGraw-Hill, an extremely rare accomplishment, one for steering coverage of the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster and the other for the launch of a public affairs television show, Platts Energy Week.
