EC COMMISSIONER CRITICIZES KOREAN SHIPYARDS
Martin Bangemann, European Commissioner for Industrial Affairs, has
criticized practices by the South Korean shipyards, which he said distort the shipbuilding
market.
Bangemann presented a report on competition in shipbuilding to the
Maritime Industries Forum, a group of European industry representatives of
shipping-related industries, following his recent visit to Korea.
Bangemann stressed that the EC will continue its efforts to persuade
Korea that the actions of its shipbuilding industry should not result in any distortion in
that market.
The council of European ministers "should take the Korean problem
into account when future EU policy for shipbuilding is discussed at its meetings in July
and November," Bangemann warned.
