Executive Moves: CN, Rescar, Werner

Railway and railcar repair company announce senior management promotions; industry veteran joins board.

CN President and CEO J.J. Ruest on Wednesday announced senior management promotions, saying he was tapping experienced precision scheduled railroaders to drive cost efficiencies and capacity-utilization initiatives while advancing the railway’s supply chain mind-set and customer focus.
“Amid solid market demand, we aim to grow faster than the broader economy,” Ruest said. “These outstanding CN leaders will enhance our precision scheduled railroad model — one we developed and that redefined the industry — to new levels of operating efficiency and superior supply chain customer service.”
Doug MacDonald and Keith Reardon will head CN’s sales and marketing initiatives and all non-rail supply chain operations, including intermodal container terminals and transload facilities.
John Orr has been named senior vice president and chief transportation officer responsible for CN’s day-to-day rail operations.
MacDonald, previously the vice president of bulk, becomes the senior vice president of rail-centric supply chain growth. Reardon, previously vice president of intermodal and automotive, becomes senior vice president of consumer product supply chain growth.
Orr, most recently senior vice president of CN’s Southern Region, will focus on the velocity of assets, cost efficiency, sales and increasing GTM production.
Also promoted was Derek Taylor, from general manager of the Southern Region operations center to vice president of the region, based in Homewood, Ill.

Jack Holmes has joined the board of directors of transportation and logistics company Werner Enterprises, effective Tuesday. He also will serve on the company’s audit and compensation committees.
Holmes was president of UPS Freight from 2007 until his retirement in 2016. He currently serves as the vice chairman and a director of EmergeTMS in Scottsdale, Ariz., and is a member of the boards of Simplified Logistics LLC, LaserShip and Link Labs.

Rescar Companies has appointed Andy Schaffer as president of its plant division. Schaffer will oversee operations for Rescar’s six full-service plants in Channelview, Longview and Orange, Texas; Dubois, Pa.; Gordon, Ga.; and Savanna, Ill.
Schaffer’s 40-year career in the railcar repair industry started at Rescar. He was hired as a laborer and over the next 32 years rose to vice president of operations. He joined Watco Mechanical Services in October 2010 as senior vice president and COO and served in that role until July 2014, when Watco and Greenbrier entered into a joint venture to form GBW Railcar Services. He then was named senior vice president and COO of GBW.
Schaffer returned to Rescar in January 2016 when he joined AllTranstek  LLC as senior vice president and COO.
