Exel picks ocean contract software from Descartes

Exel, a U.K. provider of logistics services, has contracted with the Descartes Systems Group Inc., a Canadian provider of on-demand applications, for software to handle sea freight bookings.

Exel has deployed Descartes' Ocean Contract Management software to provide shipping rate information. Specifically, the application stores, amends, updates and retrieves rates for ocean-going cargo, as well as providing rate quotes and calculations.

The software has been used to store all of Exel's 'buy' rates with ocean carriers, in both regulated and non-regulated trade lanes, as well as to store Exel's 'sell' rates, including new non-vessel-operating common carrier service arrangements.

Exel, which employs over 109,000 people in 2,050 locations in 120 countries, had a 'pro forma' turnover of $6.7 billion in 2004.

Descartes Systems Group, Inc., is based in Waterloo, Ontario.
