Exel to operate General Mills Southeast DC
Exel will operate a new warehouse in Social Circle, Ga., on behalf of General Mills in mid-2010.
The new 1.5-million-square-foot warehouse will serve General Mills’ in the Southeast region.
“The new warehouse is part of General Mills’ effort to reposition our distribution network to more effectively service customers in this fast-growing market,” said Kevin Schoen, vice president of logistics at General Mills, in a statement.
“Located about 10 miles from an existing cereal manufacturing plant and about 45 miles from Atlanta, the location of the new facility is easily accessible for both inbound and outbound shipments,” he added.
Exel will provide distribution services for General Mills’ food products, such as cereals and snacks. The logistics services company conducted extensive studies of storage and picking technologies.
“The new facility offers higher storage density through increased racking than a typical facility, and incorporates varying levels of mechanization — such as a layer pick line — to maximize efficiency and productivity,” Exel said.
Exel operates several other dry and refrigerated distribution centers in the United States and Canada for General Mills. The company also provides primary and secondary packaging services, a portion of which is supported by Power Packaging, an Exel company.
