EXPLOSION ON MAERSK TRANSPACIFIC SHIP OFF DUBAI
The Maersk Tokyo, a 3,500-TEU containership operated by Maersk Line, has
been damaged by an underdeck explosion in waters off Dubai.
Employed in the joint TP5 U.S./Far East/MidEast transpacific container
service of the Maersk/Sea-Land alliance, the containership is currently being towed to the
port of Jebel Ali for inspection.
Four of the vessel’s 30 crew members are missing, presumed dead.
The vessel is owned by Hong Kong-based Unique Shipping and chartered to
Maersk.
