FDA HALTS EGG AND ANIMAL FEED IMPORTS FROM EUROPE
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said late Friday that it will halt
imports of eggs, game meats and products containing egg products from
Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
The agency said it’s responding to reports that cancer-causing PCBs and
dioxins may have contaminated these products in January. The FDA is
sampling products which have been imported since that time.
The FDA has also stopped all European animal and pet feed which may have been
mixed with contaminated eggs and poultry products. The agency is
working closely with the Belgian government in its investigation.
For importers to get their detained products released, they must provide
laboratory test results showing PCBs are not detectable and that dioxins do
not exceed 1 part-per-trillion.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is holding poultry and pork from
Europe, because of the possibility that the livestock may been fed
contaminated feed.
