Final span of FEC track opens today
Florida East Coast Railway cleanup work in the wake of a two-train collision and derailment in Dania Beach Tuesday has been completed, and full service was expected to be resumed on the southernmost span of track Thursday morning.
The crash and derailment occurred near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. With more than 30 cars derailed, the FEC shut down a line from Jacksonville to Miami Tuesday, and the cleanup work stopped normal South Florida service Wednesday.
The final span of track, between the collision site and the FEC intermodal rail yard in Hialeah, was set to open Thursday morning. The Perimeter Access Road around the airport, which had been shut down near the site of the derailments, was also scheduled to open Thursday.
There were no injuries or hazardous materials spilled, but a northbound shipment of rock that accounted for most of the derailed cars created a major cleanup challenge. Four cars that were derailed on the southbound train were carrying intermodal containers.
