FMC WITHHOLDS ACTION AGAINST BRAZIL
As expected, the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission has decided not to
impose sanctions on Brazil following negotiations that resolved a bilateral
maritime dispute.
FMC Chairman Hal Creel said, however, that the FMC will continue to
monitor the case "to ensure that permanent solutions to these matters are
put into place promptly."
Brazilian representatives agreed in recent negotiations to drop
regulations that discriminated against non-Brazilian ships. In return, the
U.S. agreed to quit collecting a tonnage tax on Brazilian-flag ships
calling U.S. ports.
