Two brothers were sentenced Friday in federal court in New York to serve three years in prison for smuggling firearms from the United States to the Philippines.
A former New York City Police officer and his brother, a former Customs and Border Protection officer, were sentenced Friday in federal court in New York to serve three years in prison for smuggling firearms from the United States to the Philippines.
The defendants, Rex Maralit, formerly of the NYPD, and Wilfredo Maralit, who worked as a CBP officer at the Los Angeles International Airport, pleaded guilty to violating the Arms Export Control Act on June 12, 2014.
According to the Justice Department, a third brother, Ariel Maralit, lives in the Philippines and remains a fugitive.
“Between January 2009 and September 2013, the defendants exported a variety of military-style firearms, along with high-capacity magazines and accessories for those weapons, from the United States to the Philippines where they were sold to overseas customers. Both Rex and Wilfredo Maralit used their official credentials and status to obtain and ship the weapons without first obtaining a license from the State Department,” the Justice Department said in a statement.
