Former UP chairman dead at 94

James H. Evans, former chairman of Union Pacific Railroad chairman, died May 11.

   James H. Evans, former Union Pacific Railroad chairman, died May 11. He was 94.
   Evans served as UP chairman from 1977 to 1985. Upon the formation of Union Pacific Corp. in 1969, he joined its management as president and a director. He helped oversee UP’s merger with Missouri Pacific Railroad and Western Pacific Railroad.
   Prior to joining UP, Evans was president and chairman of the Seamen’s Bank for Savings. He also served as financial vice president and director of Dun & Bradstreet, following the merger with Reuben H. Donnelley Corp., where he had served as secretary-treasurer and general counsel prior to being elected a vice president. 
   Born June 26, 1920, in Lansing, Mich., his first position following his service as a Navy lieutenant in World War II was with Harris Trust & Savings Bank in Chicago as an attorney and loan officer.
   Evans also held director positions with American Telephone and Telegraph Co., The Anaconda Co., Bristol-Myers Co., Citicorp/Citibank, Dun & Bradstreet, General Motors and Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Evans was a former co-chairman of The Business Roundtable and a former member of The Business Council.
   His wife, Mary Johnston Evans, of East Hampton and New York City died on May 5, 2014.
