FTAA REQUESTS U.S. INDUSTRY COMPUTER EXPERTS TO JOIN COMMITTEE

The Free Trade Area of the Americas is searching for a few U.S. industry computer experts to join an electronic commerce committee.

The Joint Government-Private Sector Committee of Experts on Electronic Commerce was created by 34 countries of the FTAA to recommend ways to increase the use of electronic commerce in the Western Hemisphere.

The committee met in Miami Jan. 25-26. Thirteen U.S. industry officials participated in 18 months of negotiations prior to the meeting.

Before the next FTAA ministerial meeting in April 2001, the committee will focus on electronic commerce issues covering a variety of areas, such as access and infrastructure and online payments.

Industry members interested in participating in the committee should contact the U.S. Office of the U.S. Trade Representative at (202) 395 3475, or to the U.S. Commerce Department at (202) 482-5324, by March 24.
