Hawaii wants spill money for reef restoration

Following last year’s spill of molasses from a pipeline in Honolulu Harbor, state legislators in Hawaii are suggesting that fines or settlements go into a fund to be used for coral reef restoration.
The Associated Press reported that in addition to a special fund for Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, lawmakers want the University of Hawaii to update a 1996 report on emergency response plans in case of an oil spill and to require contractors to quickly report lost, stolen or damaged property.
The spill occurred last September as molasses was being loaded on a Matson ship.
