Horizon Lines hikes port demurrage charges

Horizon Lines is increasing demurrage charges at U.S. terminals for port-to-port cargo and intermodal containers cargo in the U.S./Puerto Rico trade.

The number of free time days allowed remain, but the subsequent amounts charged per day will increase effective Feb. 15. The largest increase is for inbound reefer shipments into Elizabeth, N.J., where the charge has increased from $50 for the first two calendar days to $250 per day after free time has expired. Full details of the increases are available from Horizon at http://horizonlines.com/includes/news/pr/NA%20Demurrage%20Increase%20Eff%202-15-2005.doc.

“The rapid increase in intermodal shipments in/out of North America, both domestically and internationally, has strained the capacity of our nation’s ports to handle the volume of containers,” Horizon Lines said in statement. “To reduce the number of containers dwelling in its terminal, our North American terminal operator, APM Terminals, has increased the charges it assesses to containers dwelling in its terminals beyond any free-time allowances. Regrettably, we must pass along these increases to you.”
