Houston ends lease of Galveston terminal

The ports of Galveston and Houston have ended an arrangement where the Port of Houston had leased a 46 acre terminal in the other city.

On Monday, Galveston ended Houston’s lease of the terminal.

The Port of Houston had only limited success in finding a container carrier that wanted to regularly call at the terminal at Pier 10, which it had leased since 1997.

According to the Galveston Daily News it has been four years since containers moved through the facility. A Houston spokesman said the last vessel of any sort to call there was early this fall.

The newspaper said with the pier now under their control, Galveston officials hope to attract new business to the pier.

At the same time, the two ports have announced a cooperative agreement for development over the next decade of the 1,200-acre Pelican Island, where Galveston has about 100 acres and Houston 1,100 acres.
