The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority in a special meeting held yesterday approved a $1.5 million increase in funding for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ maintenance dredging of a portion of the Bayport Ship Channel.
The total cost of the project is projected to be $3.5 million.
The additional contribution is a part of the local and federal effort to improve the safety and efficiency of the Bayport flare area. The port authority is contributing the money to accelerate action on this section of the Houston Ship Channel, which has experienced increased shoaling since the spring due to floodwaters, spokeswoman Lisa Ashley said.
