Indiana railroad bridge reopens after collapse

Norfolk Southern has advised customers in the area to expect delays of 48 to 72 hours due to a heavy backlog of traffic and more rain expected in the next few days.

A railroad bridge in Huntington County, Ind. has been repaired and opened to rail traffic after collapsing during heavy rains and flooding Tuesday, according to a Norfolk Southern Corp. service operations alert.
NS closed its mainline service between Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Peru, Ind. yesterday while railway personnel were dispatched to the site to assess the damage and repair the collapsed bridge.
According to a report from local news affiliate ABC 21/NBC 33, one resident of the small town of Andrew, Ind. said a Norfolk Southern train had just passed over the bridge less than an hour before it collapsed.
The railway said more rain is expected in the area, as the remnants from Tropical Storm Bill move north through the Midwest. Due to the sustained bad weather, along with a heavy backlog of traffic, NS advised customers to continue to expect cargo delays of 48 to 72 hours.
NS personnel remain on-site to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
