INDUSTRY GROUP SEEKS U.S. CUSTOMS AUTOMATION FUNDING
A coalition of trade associations, shippers, customs brokers, forwarders
and carriers is lobbying Congress for increased funding of U.S. Customs
automation.
The Coalition for Customs Automation Funding is seeking money to finance
development of Customs’ Automated Commercial Environment and to maintain
the agency’s existing computer system, the Automated Commercial System.
Ron Schoof of Caterpillar, a member of the coalition, said some of the
$800 million in merchandise processing fees that the industry has paid
annually in the last 10 years should be used for Customs automation.
