INTERMODAL RAIL UP 6.5% IN 3Q

Intermodal rail traffic increased 6.5 percent during the third quarter over the same period last year, according to the Intermodal Association of North America.

International containers moving by rail increased almost 12 percent. International containers accounted for more than 50 percent of intermodal traffic, the IANA said.

The use of trailers continues to decline, while containers now account for 74 percent of all intermodal traffic, according to the association.

IANA also projected fuel prices to peak in the fourth quarter of this year, and moderate thereafter. But fuel prices will remain higher than they were at the end of 1999, the association said.
