Japan has mutual recognition agreements for Authorized Economic Operator programs with six economies: New Zealand, the United States, European Union, Canada, South Korea and Singapore.

There are 496 companies in Japan that have achieved AEO status, according to the Japanese Embassy in Washington, compared to 10,435 members (more than 4,500 importers) in the equivalent U.S. Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism.

The programs grant trade benefits based on the level of a company’s supply chain security.

Japan Customs has several types of AEO categories:

  • Authorized Importers  – 87.
  • Authorized Exporters  – 245.
  • Authorized Warehouse Operators – 100.
  • Authorized Customs Brokers – 60.
  • Authorized Logistics Operators – 4.

Only authorized exporters in Japan receive reciprocal benefits from U.S. Customs under the supply chain partnership.
