Alliance partners "K" Line, COSCO Container Lines and Yangming
Line are studying a potential new Asia/U.S. East Coast service via Panama.
No final conclusion has been reached and no decision has been made, a
spokesman for "K" Line said.
The spokesman declined to comment further on any specific details of the
plan.
The new service reportedly would link ports in Japan and China non-stop to
New York, followed by calls in Norfolk and either Charleston or Savannah on the
return. It would need a fleet of nine 3,000-TEU vessels and compete with faster West Coast
services using five-ship fleets plus a rail landbrige to East Coast destinations.
