Kumar named dean at KingÆs Point

Shashi Kumar has been named as the new academic dean at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, New York.

He succeeds Warren Mazek, who will remain on staff as a professor of economics at the academy. Mazek had been dean for 20 years until he stepped down in July of 2006.

After spending 10 years at sea for a shipping company based in Singapore, Kumar earned a Masters in maritime management at Maine Maritime Academy, and then a doctorate in logistics from the University of Wales in Cardiff.

Kumar returned to Maine Maritime where he created the Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Logistics. He subsequently served as dean until departing for King's point.

Kumar said the shipping industry, 'must look at the emerging world, not just the historical world.' He plans to have the curriculum focus on intermodal transportation, international business and managing products and technology.
