L.A. harbor commission asks staff to retool proposed intermodal yard

The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday that the newly appointed Los Angeles Harbor Commission has asked its staff to reconsider plans for a proposed BNSF intermodal rail yard near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Port staff is to look at innovative ways to cut down on diesel pollution, while moving cargo from marine terminals to the rail yard, such as using trucks powered by electricity and liquefied natural gas, or use of a magnetic levitation train, the Times reported.

The rail yard, as presently planned, could burden the area with an additional 1 million truck trips annually, as containers are drayed to and from the docks.
