L.A. intermodal gateway already a community target

A proposed Burlington Northern Santa Fe intermodal yard near the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles encountered stiff opposition from residents who live near the site, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reported Friday.

About 300 residents voiced concerns about the yard, dubbed the Southern California Intermodal Gateway, during a public forum to help prepare the project’s environmental review.

Their primary complaint was the additional pollution and truck trips the 153-acre, $175 million facility would generate, the newspaper reported. BNSF plans to open the yard in 2009.

Another public forum is set for Thursday.
