The year-over-year surge in iron ore loadings at Canadian ports in 2015 was not enough to offset the decline in loadings at U.S. ports.
Iron or shipments on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway totaled 54.4 million tons in 2015, an 8.5 percent decline from 2014, according to the Lakes Carriers’ Association, which represents 15 American companies that operate 56 U.S.-flag vessels on the Great Lakes.
Loadings at U.S. ports totaled 47.1 million tons in 2015, a 12.4 percent decline year-over-year.
However, loadings at Canadian ports surged 29.8 percent from 2014 to 7.3 million tons.
