Supply chain solutions provider NFI Industries is hiring 5,000 people before the end of 2020 to speed holiday shipments and meet the pandemic-induced demand for goods to manage life at home and work under the same roof.
Other evidence: Per-mile freight rates are rising along with tender rejections. Fleets ordered 52,000 new trailers in September, the third-highest order month on record.
Some of the new NFI jobs are seasonal. Others are full-time positions. The company wants experienced and novice warehouse workers.
“The logistics industry has proven to be a stable and consistent career during unforeseen circumstances,” NFI CEO Sid Brown said in a press release.
NFI has job openings at warehouses in Southern California, the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania; Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas; Minooka, Illinois and other locations. NFI has a significant drayage presence at nearly every major U.S. port.
“In the past five months, trucking employment has recovered just a quarter of the jobs lost in March and April, “ said Tim DeNoyer, vice president and senior analyst at ACT Research.
NFI operates a dedicated and drayage fleet of more than 4,500 tractors, run by company drivers, owner-operators and licensed motor carriers. Drivers with CDL-A licenses, corporate office and maintenance personnel, also are needed.
NFI partners with Daimler Trucks North America’s Freightliner brand and Volvo Trucks North America in testing Class 8 battery-powered electric trucks in Southern California. It expects to convert up to half its fleet to zero-emission electric powertrains by 2025.
Privately held NFI generates is based in Camden, New Jersey. It has more than $2 billion in annual revenue and more than 13,100 employees. It operates 350 locations and more than 50 million square feet of warehousing space globally.
