Lufthansa Cargo shipments detained by Venezuelan officials

Lufthansa Cargo said Tuesday that officials in Venezuela halted the transport from Caracas to Israel of five consignments, each weighing 65 kilograms. Officials also closed down the Lufthansa Cargo warehouse in Caracas and arrested a member of its staff.

The German airline said the shipments did not contain missiles or other weapons. On data privacy grounds, Lufthansa said it cannot disclose any details about the consigner or consignee of the air freight.

“As on all transports, Lufthansa Cargo adhered strictly to the relevant IATA directives and legal regulations. All the required paperwork and export permits were available for the shipments halted by the Venzuelan authorities. The consignment was classified in the dangerous goods category and met all the prerequisites necessary for air freight,” Lufthansa said in a statement.

Lufthansa said that it remains in close contact with the Venezuelan authorities for the purpose of resolving all queries regarding the consignment and clarifying misunderstandings.
