Maersk Sealand switches Nhava Sheva terminal
Maersk Sealand is switching calls in Nhava Sheva on its weekly U.S./Mediterranean/Indian Subcontinent “MECL” service from the P&O Ports-operated NSICT terminal to the adjacent state-run JNPT terminal.
The JNPT terminal has a capacity of 22,000 TEUs in comparison to 11,500 TEUs at the NSICT terminal. Maersk Sealand said the switch will mean the “MECL” service will be “less susceptible to congestion during peak periods.”
As a result of the change, the scheduled arrival and departure day in each port has changed from every Thursday and Friday respectively, to arrive every Tuesday and depart every Thursday.
The vessel “Maersk Georgia” will make the first departure from the JNPT terminal on June 1.
The “MECL” service uses seven ships of about 4,600 TEUs and has a port rotation of Charleston; Norfolk; New York; Malaga; Jeddah; Salalah; Dubai, Jebel Ali; Nhava Sheva; Salalah and back to Charleston.
APL, Evergreen, Hapag-Lloyd, P&O Nedlloyd and Safmarine all take space on varying sections of the “MECL” service.
