MAERSK TAKES DELIVERY OF 9TH 6,600-TEU SHIP
Maersk Line has named a new 6,600-TEU containership, the
Skagen Maersk.
The new ship, built by the A.P. Moller group shipyard, is the ninth in
a series of 13 "S-class" containerships with a reported capacity of 6,600-TEU.
The ship will enter into service in Copenhagen on Sept. 9, before
sailing to Asia.
The S-class series complements the earlier "K-class" series
of six 6,000-TEU containerships that started with the Regina Maersk in 1996.
Maersk has said that 13 of the big ships will be deployed in the AE5/TP6
"pendulum" loop of Maersk and Sea-Land Service calling at the U.S. West Coast,
Asia and northern Europe.
