MALAYSIA JOINS CSI PROGRAM

Malaysia Customs has agreed to participate in a U.S. Customs program to improve security of ocean containers.

“We recognize the high volume of trade between the ports of Klang and Tanjung Pelepas and seaports in the U.S. and Malaysia’s role as an intermodal transport hub for cargo originating in many countries,” said U.S. Customs Commissioner Robert C. Bonner in a statement Jan. 21.

The CSI agreement with Malaysia was signed this week in Putrajaya by U.S. Customs Deputy Commissioner Douglas M. Browning and Malaysia Customs Director General Datuk Abdul Halil Bin Abdul Mutalib.

“We recognize the importance to deter and interdict any terrorist attempt to disrupt global trade or to attempt to make use of commercial shipping to further their own schemes,” the Malaysia Customs Director General said.
