McLean, Raymond chair containerization panel
Irena McLean, widow of containerization pioneer Malcom McLean, and Charles 'Chuck' Raymond, chairman president and chief executive officer of Horizon Lines, will lead a committee to implement the History of Containerization Project sponsored by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII).
'The goal of the project is to preserve and document the containerization industry's past for future generations by creating a permanent museum exhibit,' the institute said in a statement. Several programs have already begun.
On April 26, 2006, CII and industry sponsors will host a gala in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the 50th anniversary of first voyage of the 'Ideal X,' the first vessel to carry containers.
The CII is asking for help in collecting historical memorabilia associated with the development of containerization and modern intermodalism. In cooperation with the Commonwealth Policy Institute Network (CPIN) in Washington, CII has also started to videotape memoirs of persons in the industry who worked with Malcom McLean. This 'living history' legacy will be made available to the public.
