MOL car carrier suspected of leaking fuel in LA harbor

The pure car/truck carrier vessel Istra Ace leaked an unknown substance, suspected to be fuel, while docked at berth 202 in the Port of Los Angeles Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

An MOL vessel is suspected of leaking fuel oil into the Port of Los Angeles harbor while docked at berth 202 on Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The Bahamas-flagged pure car/truck carrier vessel Istra Ace was reported to be leaking an unknown substance, which authorities suspect to be fuel, causing a visible sheen on the surface of surrounding water.
The quantity of the leaked substance is also unknown, but LAFD spokesperson Margaret Stewart said the department dispatched boats along with the Coast Guard and were able to stop the leak.
Once the LAFD Hazmat and Coast Guard teams have determined the “situation is static and no life hazard exists” a private company will perform the clean up and environmental mitigation work, Stewart said.
MOL could face serious fines and other penalties as a result of the incident, which is still under investigation.
