Through its subsidiary MOL Information Systems, the Japanese ocean carrier will conduct a joint study on the analysis and use of big data in ocean shipping with Yokohama National University.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and its subsidiary MOL Information Systems, Ltd. have partnered with Yokohama National University to study ocean shipping data analytics, the company said in a statement.
The Japanese ocean carrier will conduct a joint study with YNU on the analysis and use of big data in ocean shipping in an effort to improve economic and maritime data analysis and market and bunker price forecasting methods using artificial intelligence (AI).
The study will be carried out in cooperation with Professor Tomoharu Nagao of the YNU’s Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences, one of Japan’s top AI experts and a specialist in evolutionary computation.
In addition, MOL and YNU will conduct studies aimed at developing and improving existing management support tools.
MOL Information Systems is a wholly owned subsidiary of the MOL Group established to develop, maintain, and support systems and networks across the shipping conglomerate’s various divisions.
