Monsoon rains suspend operations at Mumbai port

Container loading and unloading, as well as cargo operations alongside berths, have been affected this week as the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in India, and the greater South Asia region, reels from the large-scale monsoon floods.

Trucking and rail operations are suspended as well as the monsoon washes out roads and rail tracks.

The Indian port of Jawaharlal Nehru, also known as Nhava Sheva, near Mumbai is experiencing a deluge of rain, causing port operations to be suspended until further notice due to flooding, according to a report from Lloyds Loading List.
The monsoon rains have halted port operations, including cargo operations alongside berths, outer anchorages and the port lighterage, since August 30.
Container loading and unloading at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust terminal, the port’s largest terminal, were affected on Wednesday, reported Lloyd’s Loading List.
Additionally, the customs online electronic data interchange (EDI) systems were not working nationwide, due to server breakdowns. Delays will increase if EDI is not restored in the next few days, reported Lloyd’s Loading List.
The flooding reduced trading activity in the stock market, led to power outages and flights being delayed or diverted. Furthermore, more than 1,200 casualties have been reported as a result of the monsoons in the greater South Asia region.
