N.J. receives federal grants for transport infrastructure

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released $48 million for intermodal projects surrounding Port Newark and plans to deliver another $40 million by fiscal year 2009, New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez said earlier this month.

The money is to be used for 10 port, rail and road improvements in the so-called Liberty Corridor designed to ease congestion, redevelop industrial areas and reduce pollution.

The funding process has been 10 years in the making and includes contributions from state and private sources.

“Liberty Corridor will be an incredible enhancement to Maher Terminals, paving the way to facilitate transportation needs around the state and to and from the Port of New York-New Jersey,' said Sam Crane, senior vice president for external affairs at Maher Terminals. 'This increased and more efficient access will be good for business, good for the consumer, and good for the State of New Jersey.'

The projects funded by the federal grants include:

   ' Whittpenn Bridge replacement.

' North Jersey Doublestack Clearance/National Docks.

   ' Port Reading Junction.

   ' Tremley Point Connector Road.

' North Avenue Corridor Project ' Phase 1.

   ' Route 35/36 Eatontown.

' Route 1, section 6V, North of Ryders Lane to South of Milltown Road.

   ' Route 18/Interstate 287 Connection
