NORTH EUROPE/CANADA CONFERENCES CONSIDER WESTBOUND CHARGE
Shipping lines of the Canadian North Atlantic Westbound West Conference
and the Continental Canadian Westbound Freight Conferences, are discussing the
introduction of an equipment imbalance surcharge, a conference spokesman told American
Shipper.
A $250-per-container surcharge is due to be implemented next month by the
Trans-Atlantic Conference Agreement in the northern Europe/U.S. westbound trade.
The surcharge is designed to compensate ocean carriers for the cost of
repositioning containers from North America to Europe, following the surge in the
westbound transatlantic trade.
Members of the northern Europe/Canada conferences are ACL, Canada Maritime,
Cast, Hapag-Lloyd and OOCL.
