NORTHWEST EXPANDS FUEL SURCHARGE
Northwest Airlines will add a fuel surcharge of 4 cents per pound to all domestic air shipments beginning Feb. 1, adding to a 10-cent surcharge on transatlantic shipments that will go into effect at the same time.
“The extension of this charge to U.S. domestic freight shipments is a regrettable necessity,” said Dal DeWolf, Northwest Cargo’s director of network planning.
Northwest said the average world spot price it paid for jet fuel last year doubled from 33 cents per gallon in early March to 71 cents per gallon in December.
