NYK, Wan Hai ships involved in collision off Japan

A 77,000-ton bulk carrier operated by NYK and a 26,000-ton containership run by Wan Hai Lines collided early this morning off the Japanese coast.

No casualties have been reported but the Japan Coast Guard has reported a small amount of oil leaking from the Wan Hai vessel.

NYK’s ship, Alpha Action, had sailed from Nagoya in Japan on the previous day and was heading to Chile when the collision with the 2,200-TEU Wan Hai 307 occurred at 01:50 local time about 12 kilometers southwest of Oshima. Both ships are now drifting east of where the collision occurred, NYK said in a statement.
