The New York Shipping Exchange (NYSHEX) has appointed four new members to its board of directors and launched what it calls the “governing NYSHEX Member Council,” which consists of representatives from shippers and carriers alike.
The New York Shipping Exchange (NYSHEX), which operates a platform on which shippers and ocean carriers can negotiate so-called “smart” contracts, has appointed four new members to its board of directors, the company said in a statement Tuesday.
The newest members of the NYSHEX board include Bjorn Jensen, vice president of global logistics for Electrolux; Jochen Gutschmidt, head of global logistics procurement at Nestlé; Nick Fafoutis, senior VP of sales and CCO of CMA CGM America; and Donald Davis, SVP of sales and customer service for Hapag-Lloyd in North America.
In addition, NYSHEX has launched what it calls the “governing NYSHEX Member Council,” which consists of three beneficial cargo owners (BCOs), three non-vessel operating common carriers, and three carrier representatives.
The members of the council, the role of which is to support the NYSHEX board by proposing recommendations or changes to NYSHEX operations, processes, and technology, will be Mark Chadwick, executive sourcing leader at GE; Glenn Berger, VP of global transportation for Restoration Hardware; April Zobel, export traffic manager at Lansing Trade Group; David Newton, CCO of Damco USA; Nerijus Poskus, VP global head of ocean freight for Flexport; Arnold Lee, CEO of Hecny Group; Peter Hildebrandt, VP of revenue management and optimization at Maersk Line; and Howard Finkel, executive VP of COSCO Container Lines.
The NYSHEX platform allows BCOs and carriers to enter into forward ocean contracts that include binding clauses for both parties, as well as penalties for non-compliance. The primary goal of the platform is to prevent the age-old problem of shippers no-showing on container bookings and carriers rolling cargo due to vessel overbooking.
“As we continue to grow the exchange, our governance model ensures that our members actively participate in the oversight and governance of the exchange,” NYSHEX CEO Gordon Downes said in a statement. “We are excited to have these industry innovators and leaders help NYSHEX to establish fair and transparent standards for digital freight contracting, and to build enabling technology that everyone in the industry can benefit from.”
The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission approved the NYSHEX governance model in December 2017.
