PhilaPort’s Pier 122 received its first vessel in 20 years on Tuesday with the arrival of the Glovis Comet, which was carrying Hyundai and Kia automobiles.
The reopening of Pier 122 gives the port a second berth for the import and export of automobiles and roll-on/roll-off cargo, the port said.
The port purchased Pier 122 from Conrail in 2007.
“In conjunction with our tenant, approximately $3 million dollars was spent improving the facility,” said PhilaPort Director of Marketing Sean Mahoney. “This included paving, dredging , lighting, fencing and berth fender improvements.”
“With close proximity to the vehicle processing center, dual rail (NS, CSX) and the I-95 corridor, the deep-water Pier 122 facility is strategically positioned to help transform the Port of Philadelphia into a true destination auto port,” USD Group Vice President Kevin LaBorne said.
