Port of Houston sets container throughput record in 2015

The Gulf Coast port handled over 2 million TEUs so far this year, surpassing the previous record of 1.96 million TEUs set in 2014.

The Port of Houston, has officially handled over 2 million TEUs in 2015, which beats the previous record of 1.96 million TEUs for all of 2014, the Port of Houston Authority said.
Over the next decade, the port authority will invest approximately $700 million to modernize the Barbours Cut Container Terminal in order to increase efficiency, facilitate larger containerships and double the terminal’s container handling capacity.
The terminal recently took delivery of four new super post-Panamax ship-to-shore wharf cranes from Konecranes. The 289-foot high electric STS cranes have a lift height of 204 feet with the ability to handle ships 22 containers wide.
In addition, a truck entry gate has streamlined truck processing at the Bayport Container Terminal, while a mobile app for truck drivers increased efficiency.
“Projections indicate continued strong growth in containers moving across Port Authority docks in coming years. The Port Authority has continued to invest in its facilities and the newest technology to help spur growth and serve its customers,” the Port Authority said.
