The Southern California port handled 558,014 TEUs for the month, benefitting from the return of a Hyundai Merchant Marine service and the launch of new South Korean container carrier SM Lines’ transpacific offering.
The Port of Long Beach handled 558,014 TEUs of containerized cargo in April 2017, a 16.5 percent increase from the same month a year ago, according to the latest figures from the Southern California port.
Loaded inbound container volumes jumped 16.5 percent year-over-year to 288,207 TEUs for the month, while loaded outbound containers were up 3.1 percent to 116,260 TEUs and empties were up 29.3 percent to 153,547 TEUs compared with April 2016.
Through the first four months of 2017, the Port of Long Beach has handled 2.14 million TEUs, a 5.1 percent increase from the same 2016 period.
“We continue to be on pace for a strong year,” Long Beach Harbor Commission President Lori Ann Guzmán said of the throughput figures. “In April, we were pleased to welcome back Hyundai Merchant Marine as well as a new customer, SM Line.”
